What to expect at Yewlands

From your first enquiry, we take time to get to know your child and your family. We offer visits to explore our setting, gentle settling-in tailored to each child, and ongoing communication so you feel informed and supported every step of the way.

Settling In at Yewlands

We want every child to feel safe, happy and confident from the moment they join us.  It’s completely normal for children to take a little time to settle — we’ll support you every step of the way.  We follow a curiosity-led approach, allowing children to explore and build confidence in their own time.
Our settling-in process is gentle, child-led and based on strong relationships.

Every child is unique — we follow their pace, not a fixed timetable.

Your Child’s Key Person

Before your child starts, you will be introduced to their key person.
They will:

  • Build a strong, trusting bond with your child

  • Understand their routines and comforters

  • Be your main point of contact

  • Share updates and reassurance

  • Support your child’s emotional wellbeing

This relationship is the foundation of your child’s confidence at nursery.

Our Settling Sessions

We usually offer...
Two or three short visits before your child’s official start date. These are for around an hour and we usually encourage parents to step out during this time, so your child can begin building relationships with the team in their room.  We can adapt settling sessions depending on your child’s age, needs and confidence. We can adapt settling sessions depending on your child’s age, needs and confidence. If your child needs extra support, we’ll plan this with you.

What We Learn During Settling

During these visits we get to know:

  • Your child’s interests

  • Their comfort items

  • Sleep patterns

  • Dietary needs

  • Any routines you use at home

  • Their unique personality

The more we know, the more secure your child feels.

What to bring to settling sessions

  • Comforter (if they have one)

  • Spare clothes

  • Any key information about sleep or routines

Working Together

We will always:

  • Communicate openly

  • Listen to your worries or preferences

  • Go at your child’s pace

  • Give you updates and reassurance

  • Support you throughout the transition

If your child needs extra settling sessions — that is absolutely fine.
We will never rush them.
